Eco-friendly Cork start-up lets you rent a living, reusable, pot-grown Christmas tree

This is such a fantastic idea!

Every year, around 450,000 real Christmas trees are sold in Ireland, and this figure was even higher last year due to the pandemic, with a larger number of people opting for real trees. Many of these trees unfortunately end up in landfills and are illegally dumped in forests and parks, with each tree producing 16kg of CO2 gas and methane into the atmosphere as it decomposes.

Cork Christmas Tree Rental aims to tackle this issue and reduce the environmental impact with their brand new tree rental concept, but how does it work, you ask?

Well, it’s pretty simple:

  1. Rent: Order a living, pot-grown Christmas tree online or pick one out at their store at Blackrock Hurling Club from November 20th
  2. Water: This is the important bit. Living Christmas trees need water, so you must nourish and grow your tree by safely watering it using the watering saucer provided
  3. Return: Return your living tree on January 2nd, or arrange for collection from your home. The living tree will go back to the Christmas tree farm where it’ll continue to grow, and you can even rent the exact same tree the following Christmas!

If you grow attached to your new living Christmas tree, you also have the option to purchase it and reuse it every Christmas, or plant it permanently in the garden (the kids will love this idea!)

There are many benefits to this eco-friendly way of celebrating Christmas, but one of the most practical benefits is that you’ll never have to worry about the hassle of cleaning up those annoying shedding needles anymore as your potted tree is alive!

Speaking to Craving Cork about the new business venture, founder Colm Crowley mentions: “It’s a very sustainable way to celebrate Christmas as the Christmas tree gets to live on, and it’s something I’m really passionate about.”

The pot-grown rental trees are all grown in special Christmas tree farms locally in West Cork, and come in two sizes: 3ft for €25 and 5ft for €40. You also have the option to purchase your own tree, starting at €40 for 3ft, €65 for 5ft and €75 for 6ft.

The shop opens at Blackrock Hurling Club on November 20th, and they are also currently taking orders on their website over at ChristmasTree.ie.
