The new policy came into effect last week.
Starting on the 8th of February, Munster Technological University has begun discontinuing use of its use of single- use cups.
Instead of a disposable cup, staff and students of MTU can use their own reusable cups or get a reusable cup for €2, which is a refundable deposit.
This decision has been put in place throughout the technological university, which has a campus in Cork as well as Kerry. The aim of this is to minimise plastic waste while also bringing awareness to environmental efforts people can make on an individual level.
By phasing out disposable cups, the university aims to minimise plastic waste, contributing to broader global efforts in the sustainable and responsible use of resources.
President of MTU, Maggie Cusack, said, “This move to reusable cups is a positive step forward in MTU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership.”
The new policy has come into effect on all MTU campuses, including the Bishopstown campus, MTU Cork School of Music, MTU Crawford College of Art and Design, the National Maritime College of Ireland, and MTU Kerry North and Kerry South campuses in Tralee.
