Cork city’s Gate Cinema is now closed ’till Autumn for major refurbishments

It’ll reopen just in time for Christmas

The Gate Cinema on North Main Street will close today for several months in order to carry out major refurbishment work.

The cinema will be reopened under new ownership and will change to ‘The Arc Cinema’, a chain of cinemas with locations in Wexford, Navan and Drogheda. The chain promise a brand new look, brand new feel and brand new experience for the city centre theatre.

The announcement come’s after several years of difficulties for Irish cinemas during the pandemic, followed by a record breaking blockbuster weekend of ‘Barbenheimer’, where spending in cinemas jumped by 136% in July when compared to the previous month (according to the Bank of Ireland spending pulse stats).

The other Gate cinema locations in Mallow and Midleton are to remain open as normal, and while there is no set date yet for Cork city’s new cinema, it’s expected to be open in late Autumn, just in time for Christmas.
