An exciting new whiskey is being launched with the help of Simon Zebo

Introducing: Black Emerald

The name “Black Emerald” speaks to the richest, darkest, green-black gemstone that appears as a Black Emerald to the naked eye – but does not actually exist. This poetic misconception sparked an idea about Ireland—renowned for its 40 shades of green—and its vibrant evolution over time.

This is the vision behind Black Emerald, a new, Single Grain, Irish Whiskey born to embody the dynamic spirit of modern Ireland. It’s a nod to Ireland’s history of emigration and with it, global influence, capturing the essence of what it means to be Irish beyond our own shores. Black Emerald celebrates céad míle fáilte, the warm welcome extended not only across the Emerald Isle but around the world.

An Origin Story Rooted in Passion

Black Emerald was born over a shared drop of whiskey, sparking a conversation on Ireland’s evolving identity. Simon Zebo, renowned international rugby star, inspired by his father’s extensive whiskey collection, partnered with Ernest Cantillon, co-founder of the successful Kinsale Spirit Co., to bring this idea to life.

Together with Finian Sedgwick, a veteran in the global spirits industry, they’ve created a whiskey that reflects the vibrancy and modernity of Ireland and the versatility of Single Grain Irish Whiskey.

“We wanted to craft a whiskey that mirrors Ireland today—a small nation with a huge global impact. It’s a blend of traditional and international influences,”says Ernest.

As Black Emerald gears up for its global launch, the founders are seeking investors to join them in shaping Ireland’s next iconic whiskey brand. With deep roots in Cork, this venture aims to introduce a new generation of Irish whiskey to the world.

Embracing Diversity in the Cask and Beyond

Black Emerald represents the ever-evolving nature of Irish identity and character, reflected through its unique cask finishes. Aged in rum and cognac barrels, and always with an age statement, the whiskey draws inspiration from Ireland’s connections with the wider world, infusing bright and fruity flavours with the rum, and rich, complex flavours with the cognac.

“Our whiskey isn’t just a drink—it’s an invitation. It’s about encouraging you to pull up a chair, share a dram, a story, and toast to new friends and old,” says Simon.

Investments are now open and Irish residents can avail of 50% income tax relief with the EIIS (Employment Investment Incentive Scheme). Contact Ernest, Simon and Finian, at info@blackemerald.ie
